The Side Effects of Watching Cooking Shows

So recently I got really hooked up with cooking. So much that I started to watch lots of videos of famous chefs. Even the way they treat their ingredients is fascinating. The look, the touch, the smell… It’s like they are their babies; so much love in the air.

It got me hooked! I started to watch cooking shows. The first one was  The Big Family Cooking Showdown, which I had randomly chosen on Netflix. I loved it!

In case you don’t know the show, here’s a short summary:
Two families are competing against each other by creating amazing dishes which Giorgio Locatelli and Rosemary Shrager judge at the end. The atmosphere, the conversations amongst each other, the jokes, everything was just really nice and amusing, I felt home whilst watching it. Even when one family had to go home, no one was upset or sad, they were genuinely happy for the other family and went home with a big smile. You could feel the good vibes. I believe that’s why their dishes were always good, you need to feel the love first and be able to pass it on to your cooking. Sounds cheesy but it’s true! I’ve also noticed that cooking as a family has a deep impact on the relationship between the family members. It’s intimate, brings everyone closer, you have a great opportunity to talk to each other, share stories and thoughts and spend some quality time while learning how to cook. It is way easier to cook the ”difficult” dishes together. You know, those kinds that make you spend half of the day running from one kitchen counter to the other one, whisking eggs one by one into a mixture while making sure the butter on the stove doesn’t burn and you don’t forget to take out the bread out of the oven at the perfect time. Heck, you could even make your own pasta at home with 3-4 people. The dream? Definitely. Someday when (or better said if) I have a family I will definitely have 2-3 cooking days as a family in a week. A girl can dream, right?

So when I was done with the show, I had the urgent feeling of cooking every day! The time had never mattered. I once cooked a steak at 11 pm… I can feel your eyes widening… Stop judging.
I casually said ”a” steak, but damn, it was the best steak I had ever prepared or even eaten, gotta give me some credit here.

So 9.15 pm; I was sitting on my bed watching videos when that powerful feeling took over the control sticks of my body, especially of my reasonable thinking.
I was soo hungry and had a craving. The craving was not for a special kind of food though, I had a craving to cook! Preferably some meat.
I needed some inspiration, that’s why I paid my good old friend a quick visit; youtube.
Gordon Ramsay was the first name that crossed my mind. Usually, I would have gone for Jamie Oliver. His cooking style is amazing! Easy (at least it seems really easy), he creates a messy art in the kitchen, the way those spices and chopped vegetables fly around… It’s satisfying to watch.

Since I had seen the ”Idiot Sandwich” video of Gordon Ramsay (it was the second video I had watched of him), I wasn’t really interested in his videos anymore. I mean I know that it was ”just for fun” but let’s face it, that’s the way he treats the others.
I don’t know why I immediately typed ”Gordon Ramsay: How to Cook the Perfect Steak”, but I was happy I did. It was short, easy to follow, every step was explained perfectly with some tips and tricks. Couldn’t have been happier!

I wrote down all the ingredients I needed and ran to the closest store. 15 minutes until they were closing! Grabbed my steak, herbs and spices, a drink, some other stuff and ran back home.
I was feeling all chef-like with that newly gained confidence. Yeap, the confidence overcame me by only watching shows and reading about food. I know, pathetic.
But hey, you never know. So I started to multitask; boil the potatoes, wait 20 minutes until the steak has room temperature, season it, take the potatoes out, cut them in half and put them in a pan so they get all crispy on the outside. Heat another pan put the steak in and turn them around every minute for 3-4 minutes. Man, I was feeling good…
It’s weird because I’ve always liked cooking, but this time everything felt so different, so important, so ‘grown up’. I think it’s one of my biggest passions now.

The colors, the smell, seeing every change of the food once you start to cook it, it’s just really exciting and fulfilling. Especially being able to say ”Yeah bitch, I made this, you can taste me in that food!” is an awesome feeling.
After my steak success, I felt like crap because I had never given Gordon a chance before.

Out of my newly gained trust and interest (and a little bit of guilt), I binge watched Gordon Ramsay videos.
I absolutely adore him! He is really sweet but when it comes to food, he has these certain expectations. Once you don’t fulfill them, oh boy you are fucked… No excuses, no forgiveness. Sure it’s nothing personal, he loves to push people to their limits, which is perfect. Just like J.K. Simmons in Whiplash. You hate them at first, but once you get to know them you fall in love and no matter what they do, you just want to hug them.
